The late D K Trivedi,

who belonged to the Sompura community, traditional architects and artisans responsible for many exquisite temples and secular buildings in Gujarat and neighbouring states, decided to enter the business of mining marble at Ambaji in 1947. It was a decision catalysed by his experience in renovating the fabulous Jain temples of Ranakpur and Dilwara in the 1930s and ‘40s. The Trivedi mining business soon expanded operations to include black marble from Abu, white marble from Ambaji and serpentine green marble from Udaipur district. Originally from Dhrangadhra, known for its sandstone and stone art, the family was successful in getting a foothold in the stone extraction industry and marble trade.

Enter Kiran Trivedi in 1972. Young and enterprising, Kiran had a bent for technology, machineries and gadgets, and was a hard-core R&D man. During a visit to Italy in the 1970s, he saw the famous marble mines of Carrara and decided to bring the same technology to the mining operations started by his grandfather and father. Thus, the Trivedi mines were among the first stone quarrying operations in India to be fully mechanised with state-of-the-art imported machinery.
